Founder Max Sonnenberg faced uncertain economic times when he captured the public’s imagination with a dynamic store policy that set Woolworths apart from its competitors. Three years later, a second branch opened in Durban, with another two in Port Elizabeth and Johannesburg a year later. Over the past 80 years, our unique formula has seen the number of stores grow to over 400 across South Africa, Africa and the Middle East. Our influence also extends to Australia, New Zealand and Singapore through Country Road – a subsidiary of Woolworths Holdings, our parent company.
We’ve named our corporate responsibility framework ‘Fashion with Integrity’. It is designed to support our wider business strategy and will help us to implement sustainable working practices at ASOS. It will also help the suppliers we trade with to do the same. Operating in a responsible way is essential to our long-term future. Our customers expect it and the long-term preservation of the environment depends on it.
Foschini is the second biggest departmental retailer of cosmetics in South Africa, representing the major international brands such as Clinique, Revlon, Elizabeth Arden, Yardley and L’Oreal. The house sub-brands of Oasis, News, Instinct and WWW offer ranges of clothing and accessories located within their own areas in the stores.As the primary brand, it continues to expand and grow market share with the footprint of the brand significantly increasing in most major shopping centres. The stores are located in prime shopping centres and CBDs.
Pick n Pay is the quintessential family store focused on the customer. Since 1967 when consumer champion Raymond Ackerman purchased the first few stores, the Ackerman family’s vision has grown and expanded to now encompass stores in South Africa, Namibia, Botswana, Zambia, Mozambique, Mauritius, Swaziland and Lesotho.
